The original photograph
envelope (see below)

In general pupils "left school" at the age of 15. At this time, the Morris School was unable to offer very little further education or qualifications beyond the "School Leavers Exam". Those who wished to attain further education transferred to either the Lumley School ("Commercial Course"), Spilsby Franklin ("Technical Course") or Skegness Grammar School, where R.S.A. and G.C.E. O level courses were available. It should be noted that neither the new C.S.E. (Certificate of Secondary Education) G.C.S.E. (General Certificate of Secondary Education) existed at this time.

The Morris did however offer limited placings for a R.S.A. (Royal Society of Arts) course. The pupils  (left top) are those remaining after most have either left school, or moved to alternative further education. The "Fifth Year" was comprised of remaining pupils spanning two academic age groups.

The picture above is an image of the original envelope in which the fifth year photograph was issued to pupils, the text read:

"Holdsworths Group Photographers - Live Forever. This School Group Photograph is produced as a "School Souvenir" of yourself and your school friends - a Photograph you will look back upon and treasure more and more in later years. It is sent to you to take home on approval. Price only 3/- Bring Payment to School, or if not required return the Photograph to School"

Little was realised that 3/- was to convert to 15p and that the photograph at a later date would be presented on the Internet for prosperity - Live Forever !

Many thanks to John Crooks for the above information.

Author's Note:
Beer was in the order of 1/2p ("One and tupence") a pint (6p to 8p) !
Petrol was about 5/- (5 Shillings) a gallon (25p)
A brand new three bedroom bungalow could be purchased for about £3,500
School dinners were 5/- a week (25p)
Every pupil received 1/3 pint of milk at school daily during the morning break.
And then a new word was introduced, relating to the economy of the country "Inflation"

This photograph was taken in front of the gym.

Our thanks to Michele Morton (nee Kettle) for the supply of the image (left). In Michele's words ...............

"..........Another teacher who came to the school around the mid-sixties was a Scottish lady called Miss Watts. She was particularly keen on Scottish dancing and started everyone in country dancing classes. At the time everybody moaned and groaned, but in fact this activity turned out to be hugely rewarding and fun - and teams competed at various levels, in different venues around the county.........."

Not all Ex Morris pupils in this image (some of these lads are ex-Lumley School). Recognize any famous faces? - a full listing is published with the larger image link.

Taken in 1965 the team are the Skegness Youth Centre "Cosmos", celebrating victory after winning the Lindsey Marsh League Cup. All players were aged between 16 and 17 years.

Authors Note: It is highly likely that most will have left school at this time, but our opinion is that the image will be of interest to many.
